Ungefähr das Format von Bud Spencer, nur mit deutlich mehr Bart, der Präsenz eines klassisch ausgebildeten Schauspielers und einem überaus lautem Wesen, wie es auch auf dem Titelbild angekündigt wird.Im ersten Teil seiner Biographie lässt Bud Spencer sein aktuelles Ich auf den 18-jährigen Wettkampfschwimmer treffen, derer mal gewesen ist. Blessed tritt direkt mit dem Leser ins Gespräch – und es fühlt sich an keiner Stelle so an, als ob er mit einer Leserin reden würde - und macht von Anfang an klar, dass er sich nicht zurückzunehmen gedenkt.Nun folgt die Geschichte seines Lebens von Aufwachsen als Sohn eines politisierten Minenarbeiters im Yorkshire des Zweiten Weltkriegs, seinen Einstieg in die Schauspielkunst und ins Boxen, seine Zeit als Assistent eines Bestatters und natürlich sein Einstieg ins Theater und dann später ins Fernsehen, wo er eine tragende Rolle in einer der ersten eher realistischen Polizei-Serien überhaupt gespielt hat - 'Z-Cars'.Neben bekannten Rollen in 'Flash Gordon', 'The Phantom Menace' oder 'Henry V' (zu 'Black Adder' ist er seltsam zurückhaltend) stellt er auch noch einige weniger bekannte Rollen vor - und vor allen Dingen die Zusammenarbeit mit so prominenten Persönlichkeiten wie Peter O'Toole, von Sydow, Katherine Hepburn, Dino de Laurentio, George Lucas und Kenneth Branagh. Um nur ein paar zu nennen. Und so, wie er es beschreibt, haben wir gerade seiner Mitwirkung und Hilfe für seine Kolleginnen und Kollegen zu verdsnken, dass einige der großen Werke des Kinos überhaupt zu Größe kommen konnten.Außerdem beschreibt er ausgiebig das Zusammenkommen mit seiner Frau, Reaktionen seiner Fans auf ihn, zwei diplomatische Einsätze im fernöstlichen Raum (die man wohl mit einer gehörigen Portion Salz wahrnehmen sollte), und natürlich einige seiner Erfahrungen beim Besteigen des Mount Everest.Das Buch IST laut und scheint in vielerlei Hinsicht mit Übertreibungen gefüllt zu sein - nicht zuletzt in der Selbstbeweihräucherung, die der Autor beinahe darüber durchgängig betreibt und in dem an-dauernden 'name-dropping'. Daneben stellt er nicht Handlungen als gelungene Streiche oder auch Heldentaten dar, die nicht unbedingt für ein allzu entwickeltes moralisches Empfinden sprechen, was ihn in meinen Augen einige Sympathiepunkte kostet.In Teilen unterhaltsam und auch informativ, aber nicht wirklich ein uneingeschränkter Lesegenuss.
OK, I admit it. I bought this book because I knew Brian Blessed wrote about Peter O'Toole (it was only one chapter). My biggest memory of Brian Blessed was as Augustus in "I Claudius" and also Richard IV in "Black Adder", both of which I loved. Alas, these two roles in his life were only mentioned briefly in this memoir. The chapters he devoted the most time to concerned shows I never saw—or even heard of (like Z-Cars). I suppose they didn't get a lot of exposure in the States. His favorite movie, "Flash Gordon" seemed silly to me, heretic that I am. So I would say a lot of his good stories were wasted on me.Nonetheless, Brian's exuberant behavior comes across in his writing. He's irreverent and boisterous, fun and probably very approachable. Of course he's fun to read no matter whether I knew the references or not.
Brian Blessed has one of the most memorable voices of his generation. To hear him recount his astounding memoirs in his own voice must be heard to fully benefit. He has led such a fascinating life. I highly recommend this to everyone. Be aware he does of course use some quite salty colorful language!
Hands down, no one could read a Brian Blessed book aloud but the man himself.This audiobook is the closest thing most mere mortals could ever come to sitting down across from Brian Blessed while he regaled you with tales from his life.My heart was enriched with the warmth and kindness pouring forth from my speakers. Peals of my laughter rang out quite often as I listened. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story about Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn, boxing, or the rollicking good time that is Flash Gordon (GORDON'S ALIVE!). I love the man, and love the book.
I have been a fan of Brian for many years and he is always interesting and fun so I thought this book would be the same. And it is! His life seems to be...never dull or boring. We should all live such a life.
Fantastic, fascinating read. Hard to put down.
